Kogarah Bay is a waterfront suburb in southern Sydney. It is 16 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 1,800.

History

The area was once home to the Gweagal clan of the Tharawal people.

‘Kogarah’ comes from an aboriginal word. It means ‘rushes’ or ‘place of reeds’. Alternate spellings include ‘coggera’ or ‘cogerah’. The current spelling was settled when the railway station was built in the 1880s. The ‘Bay’ comes from the small bay on the northern shore of the Georges River. This bay is part of the suburb’s coastline.

Kogarah Bay was originally part of the suburb of Kogarah.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kogarah Bay lies on the banks of the Georges River. It has many beautiful parks and sporting fields. These include Harold Frazer Reserve and Parkside Drive Reserve.

Kogarah Bay has a small commercial district with a small group of shops. Neighbouring Kogarah has a large commercial district.

The St George Illawarra Dragons represent the area in the national rugby league.
