Kingsford is 7km south-east of the Sydney CBD in the local government area of the City of Randwick. It has a population of over 14,000.

History

Once known as South Kensington, Kingsford was named after Charles Kingsford Smith – an Australian aviator. In the 1940s, a big Greek community developed and opened many businesses. Many of these people were migrants from the island from Castellorizo.

Kingsford was originally meant to be the end of the Eastern Suburbs railway line. However, due to costs, the end of the line was changed to Bondi Junction in 1979.

A tribute to Charles Kingsford Smith, which includes a mosaic of him and his plane, was unveiled 2010 by the Mayor John Procopiadis in 2010.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Part of the Eastern Suburbs region, Kingsford is mainly a residential area housing many students from the University of New South Wales. It also lies less than 5km from Coogee Beach.
