Jindabyne is a town in south-east New South Wales, in the Snowy Mountains. It has a population of over 1,700.
History
The town’s name comes from an aboriginal word meaning “valley”.
The township moved to its present location in the 1967. This was part of the Snowy Mountains hydroelectricity Scheme.
The original township was flooded as part of the construction of Jindabyne Dam. The old town lies at the bottom of Lake Jindabyne. Parts of the old township are visible if the lake’s water levels are low.

Jindabyne is a popular holiday destination year-round.
Hiking, sailing, water skiing and fishing are some popular summer pursuits. Lake Jindabyne is purportedly one of the best places to catch trout in Australia.
The town booms in the winter. It is close to the Kosciuszko National Park. The Park is home to Australia’s highest ski resorts: Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass. Jindabyne is a service town for these resorts.
