Jamisontown is a riverside suburb of greater western Sydney. It is 56 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 5,200.

History

The area was once home to the Mulgoa people.

The suburb bears the name of Thomas Jamison. He was a pioneer landowner and First Fleet surgeon. He was granted 1,000 acres of land along the Nepean River in 1805.

The Jamisontown area remained rural for 150 years.

Jamisontown Post Office opened in 1889. It closed in 1931.

Jamisontown was the departure point for the first cross-country flight in Australia. It was made in 1911 by William Ewart Hart.

In the 1960s the area began to be subdivided and developed. Jamisontown was officially gazetted as a suburb in 1976.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Neighbouring suburb Penrith is one of the major commercial districts in Greater Western Sydney. It has four large shopping centres.

Jamisontown lies on the eastern side of the Nepean River.

The Penrith Palace Ice Rink is located in Jamisontown. It is also close to the river.
