History

Hunters Hill was originally called Moolaboola. This is the Aboriginal word for ‘meeting of waters’. This is because the area is between two rivers, the Parramatta River and Lane Cove River. Hunters Hill gets its current name from former Governor of New South Wales, John Hunter.

While Hunters Hill had its first settlers in 1835, it wasn’t established at the suburb it is today until 1861.

If shopping is what you seek, the main commercial area is near Hunters Hill Hotel and Ryde Road. There’s also specialty shops on Woolwich Road and Ferry Street.

Hunters Hill is known to attract notable residents. Actress Cate Blanchett lived there up until very recently. She sold her mansion in the area for nearly $20 million AUD at the beginning of 2017.
