Homebush has a population of over 6,000 people and is located 15km to the west of the Sydney central business district making it a popular suburb for commuters. Its local government area is the Municipality of Strathfield.

History

The area on which Homebush now stands was originally known as Liberty Plains and was settled in 1793. The exact origin of the name is a cause for debate amongst historians. Some claim it was coined by the colony’s then assistant surgeon Wentworth D’Arcy who referred to the area as his ‘Home In The Bush’ but others say the name came from Thomas Laycock who’s house, ‘Home Bush’ was later sold to D’Arcy or lost in a card game according to legend.

There is a small commercial area in Homebush with a number of shops along Rochester Street and The Crescent which sits opposite the Homebush railway station.
