Welcome to Heathcote, NSW

Heathcote is a southern suburb of Sydney. It is 36km south of Sydney’s CBD. It has a population of over 5,900.

History

The suburb was previously called ‘Bottle Forest’. There were fourteen town allotments there in 1842.

In 1835 Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell surveyed the area. He named it for an officer whom he had alongside during the Peninsula Wars against Napoleon.

Heathcote railway station opened in 1886.

Historic Victorian-style home Heathcote Hall was built in 1887. The house is heritage-listed and still stands. The 1996 television movie ‘The Munsters’ Scary Little Christmas’ was filmed there

Heathcote saw the first military wireless (radio) transmissions in Australia in 1910. The experiment was to demonstrate how the technology could monitor and report enemy movements. The experiments were successful.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Heathcote to Waterfall bushwalk has been a popular day outing since the 1930s. Heathcote National Park and the Royal National Park have numerous walking and hiking tracks. These are used by Scouts Australia as well as the public.
