Gymea is a suburb in southern Sydney. It is 26 kilometres south of Sydney’s CBD. It has a population of over 7,100.

History

The area was once home to the Eora people.

The suburb was named ‘Gymea’ in 1855. Its namesake is the Gymea Lily. ‘Gymea’ is the name the Eora gave this 6-metre tall flowering plant.

Steam trams to Gymea were operating from Cronulla and Sutherland by the 1920s. The Gymea railway station opened in 1939.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Gymea is primarily a low density, residential suburb. Its shopping strip is called Gymea Shopping Village. It is famed for its café culture. Gymea Bay Road has many restaurants, boutiques and gourmet food shops.

The Gymea Lily is a symbol of the area. It features on the crest of many local organisations. Development has eradicated many of these plants. But many lilies can be found in the Royal National Park.

The Gymea Village Fair is held every October. The streets are closed for stalls, arts and crafts, rides and music.
