Guildford is a multicultural Sydney suburb located 25km west of the city’s central business district. Part of the Greater Western Sydney region, Guildford is home to around 20,000 people.

History

Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by the indigenous Bidjigal clan, part of the Dharug people who lived across the Cumberland Plain.

One of the earliest settlers was Lieutenant Samuel North who was granted land in 1817 which he called Guildford in honour of the Earl of Guildford. The town was officially named in 1837.

Guildford has plenty of leisure facilities including parks, sports grounds and pools as well as a busy shopping centre and commercial area. Guildford is also home to some important historical landmarks such as Linnwood Hall which is listed as a building of state significance.

The area has several schools as well as a number of churches and mosques which provide places of worship for the multi-cultural community.
