Glebe is an inner-western suburb of Sydney, 3km south-west of the CBD. It’s part of the local government area of the City of Sydney in the Inner West region and has a population of over 11,000.
History
The name of the suburb comes from the fact that the land on which it was built was a glebe, originally owned by the Anglican Church. Given by Governor Arthur Phillip to Reverend Richard Johnson, Chaplain of the First Fleet in 1790, “The Glebe” was a land grant of 400 acres.
Glebe was home to the architect Edmund Blacket in the late 1800s. He built his family home, Bidura, on Glebe Point Road in 1858.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The main road through the suburb, Glebe Point Road, is home to a shopping strip which is known for its speciality shops and cafes. It is also known for a variety of ethnic restaurants including Indian, Thai and Dutch-Indonesian.
