Gerringong has a population of nearly 3,500 and can be found just ten minutes away from Kiama. It forms part of the Illawarra region in New South Wales.

History

It is believed that the name Gerringong comes from the Aboriginal meaning for ‘fearful place’. Perhaps in relation to the dense rainforest in the area which was cleared in the early 1800s when European settlers arrived.

The town had a small port which enabled the growth of the cedar export business and dairy trade. Today dairy farming is still recognised to be the area’s primary industry.

Land was marked for the creation of a township in the 1820s and it was given village status in the 1850s. Shipping from the town ended in 1893 when the South Coast Railway Line was extended to Gerringong.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

As well as dairy farming the area benefits from large scale tourism. Visitors travel from Sydney and Canberra to enjoy a taste of the seaside lifestyle. Gerringong offers beaches, swimming, surfing, fishing opportunities, and a host of eateries.

Two local vineyards also offer cellar-door sales.
