History

The first settlers moved into Forbes in 1834, after John Oxley came to Forbes on an expedition in 1817. Before this, Forbes was home to Wiradjuri people. The first chief justice of New South Wales, Sir Francis Forbes, is believed to be who Forbes is named after. In 1861, Harry Stephens discovered gold in Forbes which led to a huge population surge.

Since 2001, the Forbes Camel Races are held every year on Good Friday. Three major camel races, a merry-go-round and live music are just some of the highlights of this family friendly event.
