Fairlight is a suburb of around 5,500 people, located 13km north-east of the Sydney central business district. It is one of many suburbs which make up the area known as the Northern Beaches.

History

Fairlight is named after Fairlight House which was built by Henry Gilbert Smith in 1853. Initially, only the area near where the house once stood was called Fairlight, with the surrounding suburb originally known as Red Hill.

In 1966, the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company named a hydrofoil after the town and in 1975 Fairlight Instruments Pty Ltd, a digital audio company, created the pioneering Fairlight CMI synthesiser which became popular in the eighties and took Fairlight’s name around the world.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Fairlight Beach is a popular destination for swimmers and scuba divers and also offers a vantage point from which spectators can watch the harbour yacht races. There are a number of shops and cafes along Sydney Road and the town is also home to Manly Golf Club.
