Engadine is a residential suburb which is home to a population of around 17,000 people. It is located around 33km from the Sydney central business district.

History

The area was chosen to be a national park, but a man named Charles McAlister bought land here in 1890. He soon established an estate and called it ‘Engadine’ after the Engadin Valley in Switzerland. It’s believed the wildflowers which grew there reminded the family of home.

The land was used for grazing but soon became a popular destination for visitors from the Sydney suburbs. A railway station was built in 1920 and development began soon after.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town has a busy shopping centre and a commercial area located close to the train station. There are also numerous parks and reserves to explore. These include the Engadine Wetlands and The Royal National Park which is located on Engadine’s eastern boundary.
