Edgeworth is a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales. It is 18 kilometres west of Newcastle’s central business district and has a population of over 6,250.

History

Edgeworth was originally known as Cocked Hat Creek until 1885 when it was referred to as Young Wallsend. In December 1960 Young Wallsend adopted its present name in honour of geologist Sir Tannatt William Edgeworth David. He arrived in NSW in 1882 and was one of the first people to research coal seams in the Hunter Valley.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Edgeworth has a minor shopping centre with a Coles supermarket, a bowling club, three schools, an aged care facility, McDonald’s Restaurant, and a pub. It has its own junior and senior soccer clubs, the Edgeworth Eagles, and Sugar Valley Netball Club, that are open to all ages. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie.
