Ebenezer is located 69 kilometres north-west of Sydney with a small population of around 968. It is a historic town in New South Wales that sits on the banks of the Hawkesbury River.

History

This 19th-century village takes its name from Ebenezer in the Bible. The area was settled in 1803 by a group of families who sailed on the Coromandel in 1802. These families would worship under a gum tree that still exists opposite the local church. A man named James Mein would hold services at his house, which led the community to build the church.

Uniting Church in Ebenezer was built in the early 1800s and it is now the oldest standing church building in Australia. Ebenezer is also home to the oldest school building in the country.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is a local primary school that enrols around 120 pupils. The church is still used and worshippers can attend a Sunday service.

Some say that the village is chaotic, as it has suffered frequent flooding of the Hawkesbury River. However, many people go there to see the historic buildings including John Turnbull’s home.
