Earlwood is a Sydney suburb situated 12km south of the central business district. It falls under the local government area of the Canterbury-Bankstown Council. Earlwood has a population of more than 16,700.

History

First settled in 1827, Earlwood began life as a logging camp. It was originally called Parkes Camp after its owner, and was later changed to Parkestown as the settlement grew. It underwent two more name changes, becoming Forest Hill in the 1900s and Earlwood in 1918. After the First World War, a new subdivision was created in Earlwood to house returning soldiers and their families.

These days, Earlwood is known for its strong Greek flavour. This is evident in business names such as Acropolis Funeral services, as well as the Greek restaurants in the commercial district. A shopping centre is present here, along with a Coles supermarket and several smaller outlets. Earlwood has many parks, including Heynes Reserve, Gough Whitlam Park, and the Heritage-listed Girrawheen Park.
