Dural is a semi-rural suburb in Sydney, NSW. It’s located 36km north-west of the Sydney central business district. It’s part of the Hills District and has a population of 7,357.

History

The original inhabitants of the area were the Darug people. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word “Dooral-Dooral” meaning “smoking holly tree”.

It first appeared on a map in 1817. A local settler, James Roughly, donated the land to be used to build a church. A sandstone chapel was built on Old Northern Road in 1846.

A majority of residents are Australian-born. Other common birthplaces include England, South Africa and New Zealand.

The area has several sporting facilities, including the Dural Rugby Club. The club organises Wallatag in the summer months, which is held on a Friday night.
