Doonside is a Sydney suburb located just 40km to the west of the central business district. It is part of the Greater Western Sydney region and has a population of over 13,000 people.

History
The area now known as Doonside was originally called ‘Bungarribee’ and was lived in by the indigenous Duruk people. A large piece of Duruk land was allocated as a government stock reserve by Governor Philip Gidley King in 1802. This land was primarily used as grazing land for livestock owned by convicted herdsmen.

The Aboriginal-owned land was granted to a Scottish settler in 1823 who renamed the area. He called it Doonside after his family home in Scotland, the River Doon.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Doonside is home to the Nurragingy Reserve, a large park which has picnic spots and areas of natural bushland. There is also a private zoo, the Featherdale Wildlife Park which specialises in native Australian animals and birds.
