Dapto is a suburb in the Illawarra region of New South Wales with a population of more than 10,700. It is situated south of Sydney on the western side of Lake Illawarra.

History

The word Dapto is Aboriginal and means “water plenty.” Dapto was founded in 1834. The local people were unsuccessful at growing wheat in the suburb in the 1850s, so they turned to the dairy industry instead.

Dapto was transformed when the railway opened and a butter factory was built in 1887. By 1903, the commissioner for railways deemed Dapto Station the most valuable on the Illawarra line.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

In the centre of Dapto, you can find the fourth-largest shopping mall in the Illawarra. It features a Woolworths, Coles, Big W and over 60 other stores.

There is also the Dapto Ribbonwood Centre, which has a library and conference rooms. The area is best known for the Dapto Dogs racing ground.
