Commonly known simply as Culburra, Culburra Beach is a seaside town in the South Coast region of New South Wales. 18km southeast of Nowra and within the Shoalhaven local government area, it has a population of over 2,500.
History
Culburra Beach was originally named Wheelers Point after the first landholder of the area, George Wheeler. It was changed to Culburra in 1916, and later to Culburra Beach. The name comes from an Aboriginal word that means “sand”.
The area’s postal services were first provided from Warrain Beach Post Office. The post office was renamed Culburra Beach in 1970.
It’s the location of the famous Max Dupain photo “The Sunbaker”. The photo is considered an icon of the Australian way of life.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
A small seaside town, it’s a popular holiday, fishing, and surfing location. Culburra Beach and Warrain Beach are two popular surf beaches in the town. It’s home to the Culburra Beach Festival.
