Cranebrook is a mainly residential suburb located 65km to the west of the Sydney central business district. It is home to a population of around 15,000 people.

History

Cranebrook’s name comes from a farm which was built in the area in 1804 by the pioneer James McCarthy. He called his farm ‘Crane Brook Farm’ on account of the many cranes which lived in the area.

Tragedy struck the McCarthy family when his young daughter died. He laid her to rest in the land that went on to become one of the first Catholic cemeteries in Australia.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cranebrook’s hilly land offers residents some magnificent views of the Nepean River and the Blue Mountains, as well as over the ADI site which is home to wild kangaroos.

The town has a shopping centre on Borrowdale Way and is situated close to the Penrith Lakes Scheme. Here, visitors can find the Sydney International Regatta Centre which hosted rowing events during the Olympic games in 2000.
