Cowra is a town in New South Wales that sits on the bank of the Lachlan River. It’s based at the intersection of three major highways, and has a population of more than 9,700.

History

After sporadic settlement in the early 19th century, the Lachlan Valley was finally conquered in 1844 with the founding of ‘Coura Rocks’. This township soon came to be called Cowra, and the discovery of gold nearby helped it to flourish. A prisoner of war camp was built here during World War Two, and was the site of the infamous ‘Cowra Breakout’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cowra is a good wine region noted for its chardonnay. The Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre is a beautiful tribute to those who died in the Cowra Breakout. The gardens themselves are magnificent, and the centre holds many events and workshops on the subject of Japan. Cowra is also famous for its yearly Festival of International Understanding, which celebrates foreign cultures.
