Cooranbong is both a town and suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie. It’s 91km North of Sydney, and has a population of more than 5,000.

History

Before Cooranbong’s inception, the area was home to the Awabakal group. The name “Cooranbong” comes from the Aboriginal phrase “Kour-an-bong”, which translates as “rocky bottom creek”. The town began as a simple homestead near Dora Creek, and the Robertson Land ACT soon helped it blossom.
In the 1880s, a depression nearly destroyed Cooranbong. It was rescued by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who purchased much of the surrounding lands. They built Avondale College and the Sanitarium Health Food Company, which kick-started the town’s economy.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, Cooranbong’s lush surrounds make it popular with nature lovers. However, the biggest attraction is definitely the South Sea Islands Museum. Famed for its huge war canoe, the museum displays many artefacts from across the South Sea Islands.
