Cooks Hill is a pretty inner city suburb in Newcastle, New South Wales. The characteristic area is known for its rows of Victorian terrace homes, timber cottages, corner pubs and leafy tree-lined streets. It has a population of over 3,600.

History

Cooks Hill grew into the suburb it is today thanks to an abundance of coal mines. In 1989, an earthquake that measured 5.5 on the Richter scale caused a lot of devastation in the area. The quake, which is the first in Australian history that was known to have claimed lives, killed 13 people and injured 162.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cooks Hill is well known for Darby Street, referred to by the locals as ‘Eat Street’. This is down to its wide range of restaurants and cafes, with some offering space for al fresco dining. If art is your thing, Cooks Hill is home to the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, which has works by many artists including Sidney Nolan and William Dobell. There’s also a few smaller art galleries to visit.
