Coffs Harbour sits 540km north of Sydney and 360km south of Brisbane. A coastal city on the Mid North Coast of NSW, it is one of the largest urban centres in the area. It has a population of over 68,000.

History

The economy of Coffs Harbour was once based mainly on bananas but now comes mostly from blueberries, tourism, and fishing.

The name comes from John Korff. He named the area Korff’s Harbour after he was forced to take shelter from storms in 1847. The spelling was changed accidentally by the surveyor for the crown in 1861.

By the 1900s, it was an important timber production centre.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The city includes a campus of Southern Cross University, as well as a private and public hospital. It also has three big shopping centres and a few radio stations.

Close by is a marine national park and an airport with flights daily to Sydney and Melbourne.
