Cobar is a prosperous mining town in central western New South Wales. It is located 712km north-west of Sydney and forms part of the Cobar Shire. The population is 3,817.
History
Cobar derives its name from the native word for copper or red ochre. The area is rich in aboriginal history. At the nearby Mt Grenfell, the rocks are covered with over 1,000 Aboriginal drawings and hand stencils.
Copper mining commenced in the 1870s. The discovery of this important ore influenced the construction of many of Cobar’s fine buildings still in existence. Today the town is an important source of copper, gold, silver, zinc and lead.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Find out about Cobar’s diverse history at the Great Cobar Heritage Centre. It houses an exceptional collection of artefacts dating back to the 1870s. The must-do Heritage Walk begins here and takes you past over 40 places of interest in the town.
The nearby Fort Bourke offers excellent views of the town as well as the New Cobar Open Cut mine.
