Chifley is a landlocked suburb in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. Bounded by Anzac Pde and Bunnerong Rd, it is home to 3,147 people.

History

Chifley is named for Ben Chifley, a Labor Prime Minister who came to power at the end of WWII. People began building homes in the area during the depression of the 1930s. It became a separate suburb to neighbouring Matraville in 1964.

At around the same time, the government established a large public housing complex.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, townhouses and large family homes have replaced the original housing stock. The suburb is more affordable than its neighbours but still offers easy access to the Eastern beaches. Matraville Sports High School has attracted families to the area.

A large sports reserve including soccer and baseball fields forms the Western edge of the suburb. Playing fields, a skate park, a kids playground, and outdoor gyms make the spot a popular recreational facility.
