Charlestown is the largest town within the city of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales. It is situated about 10 kilometres west-southwest of Newcastle’s central business district and has a population of over 11,700.

History

The area was originally given to the Waratah Coal Company. The company’s pit was called South Waratah, but others referred to it as Charles’ Pit, The Gully Pit or Raspberry Gully. It is believed that the name Charlestown came from the company’s manager, Charles Smith.

After the area was surveyed in 1876, the land was divided into streets. A man called Harry Wright bought the first lot of land at auction in 1876.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Charlestown boasts the largest shopping centre in the region, which is called Charlestown Square. It can be found just off the Pacific Highway.

The suburb has lots of schools and is close to beaches and lakes. There is also a fire station, police station and the northern communications centre for the NSW Ambulance Service in the area.
