The city of Cessnock is in the Hunter region of New South Wales. It is about 52 kilometres west of Newcastle and has a population of 22,596.

History

Cessnock was once called The Coalfields. It is known as the gateway city to the Hunter Valley vineyards. This city was originally lived-in by the Wonnarua people before European settlers discovered the land.

The area was named by a Scottish settler called John Campbell. He called the suburb Cessnock after his grandfather’s Cessnock Castle. The town was developed from 1850 and turned into a service centre. In 1888, Professor Edgeworth David helped to develop the coal mining industry in the area.

Cessnock is best known for its sporting facilities. The local teams compete in many regional sporting competitions. There are even some successful sports people that come from the district.

The city is part of the Newcastle-Hunter region television market. Cessnock is also home to a railway station, local airport and bus services.
