Based in New South Wales, Carramar is a suburb in Sydney. It lies 30km west of Sydney’s Central Business District, and falls under the City of Fairfield. According to the 2011 census, Carramar has a population of over 3,400 people.

History

Carramar takes its name from the aboriginal word meaning “shade of trees”. In 1803, Governor King made the first land grant in the area. In 1924, Carramar opened its first train station. The station went by the name of South Fairfield, but this changed to Carramar in 1926. In 1927, Carramar opened a post office due to population growth.

Carramar is a multicultural suburb. Less than 40% of its residents are born in Australia. The rest come from Vietnam, China, Iraq, and Lebanon. Because of this, less than 30% of locals speak English at home. The most common languages are Vietnamese, Arabic, and Cantonese.

Carramar has limited facilities for locals. There is a small shopping centre, and an industrial area.
