Canterbury is a suburb in south-western Sydney, 10.5km southwest of the CBD. It has a population of over 6,000.

History

The area was originally home to the Bediagal clan of the Eora nation. The land was first explored by British officers from the HMS Bank Endeavour in 1770. In 1793, the area’s first land grant was made to the Chaplain of the First Fleet, Rev. Richard Johnson. He named the land Canterbury Vale.

The first major industry came in 1841 with the building of the Australian Sugar Company’s sugar mill which produced molasses and spirits.

In 1895, the railway line was completed. This led to the area becoming heavily populated.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Canterbury is home to a shopping precinct close to the Canterbury railway station. This includes an Aldi supermarket and the landmark Hotel Canterbury. It also has a recently opened shopping plaza. The shopping plaza includes a supermarket, a fitness centre, and dining shops.
