Camperdown is part of the inner west region of Sydney, New South Wales. It is situated 4 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district and has a population of over 7,800.

History

The suburb was named after the Battle of Camperdown by Governor William Bligh. He was given 240 acres of land that covered Camperdown and areas of Newtown. It wasn’t until the 19th century when the area became a farming and residential town.

A racecourse opened in 1829 where the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital can now be found. In 1850, The University of Sydney was designed by a man called Edmund Blacket. Blacket’s Great Hall opened 9 years later.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Camperdown is central to restaurants, bars, parks and transport links. There is a good mix of modern apartments, workers cottages and Victorian houses in the area.

A large area of Camperdown is covered by the University of Sydney and the many colleges within its grounds.
