Campbelltown in New South Wales is often described as a mini Sydney. It is situated 50 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district and has a population of over 10,000.

History

The suburb of Campbelltown takes it name from a lady called Elizabeth Campbell. She was the wife of Lachlan Macquarie. He was the Governor of New South Wales. The area was called Campbell-Town to start with before being changed to Campbelltown.

In 1826, a local farmer called Frederick Fisher mysteriously disappeared. There is an old tale that says his ghost was seen sitting on a fence rail and pointing to the site where his body was later found. Campbelltown hosts the Fisher’s Ghost Festival each November in memory of him.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Campbelltown has lots of great shopping centres including Campbelltown Mall, Macarthur Square and Campbelltown Marketfair. You can find many heritage buildings in the centre of the suburb.

The area is home to the Campbelltown Arts Centre, which is an 180-seat performance space. Not only are there many excellent schools in Campbelltown but it also has a big sporting community.
