A historic town, Camden sits 65km from Sydney’s CBD. It is the administrative centre for the local government of Camden Council. It has a population of over 3000.

History

Camden was originally at the north edge of land that belonged to the Gandangara people. These people named the land “Bekennie”, meaning ‘dry land’.

In 1795, European explorers named the area “Cowpastures” due to a herd of cattle that was found there after going missing previously. John Macarthur, a British army officer who owned the land, named it Camden Park after his sponsor Lord Camden.

As Macarthur’s wool industry grew in the area, locals pushed for the area to become a town. Camden Post Office opened in 1841, years after MacArthur’s death.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Camden Show takes place every year. It combines amusements and park attractions, along with state fair events.

Camden has three local radio stations and three local newspapers.
