The pretty suburb of Cabarita is only 16km west of Sydney in the City of Canada Bay local government area. Situated on the banks of the river, it has several new housing estates and is one of the most pleasant suburbs in the region. It has a population of almost 2,000 people.

History

The name Cabarita is taken from the native Australian word meaning “by the water” and it was originally a swamp. The first land grants were made in 1795 and part of the area was set aside as a public space.

In the early days, Cabarita was a heavy industry area which was later replaced by housing developments. Some of the original buildings still remain, including the Bushell’s coffee and tea building. An electric tramway was in operation in the suburb up until 1948 and the swamps have been drained to enable the building of a golf course.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is Rivercat ferry that operates from the wharf and the area has several heritage buildings and monuments. There are plenty of facilities that were created along with the many new housing developments in the area.

From gymnasiums and golf courses to playing fields and restaurants, there is no shortage of fitness and leisure facilities.
