History

Bundeena has a colourful history dating from the earliest days of colonial Sydney.

Bass and Flinders surveyed the area in 1796. They moved on, deeming it unsuitable for a settlement.

By 1815, people were using the foreshore caves as storage for illegal grog.

Owen Byrne was the first official settler in the area, settling in 1832. George Simpson followed in 1863. Ferries from Cronulla to Bundeena commenced in 1915.

Bundeena is an Aboriginal word. It means ‘noise like thunder’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Bundeena is a small, close-knit community. Residents enjoy a bush setting on the banks of the Port Hacking River.

A quaint shopping village includes cafés and eateries. These are popular with weekend visitors.
Walkers come to trek through the Royal National Park.

The neighbourhood has a sports oval, Bowling Club and RSL Club for recreation. It has a primary school and pre-school.
