Broadmeadow sits at the heart of the city of Newcastle. The area has a population of 1,552.

History

Nine different roads and tram lines converge in Broadmeadow. The city’s main commercial centre is called Nineways as a result. The area was part of the Newcastle Pasturage Reserve. The Sydney to Newcastle railway was built in the 1880s. This meant that development in the local area increased.

Broadmeadow was also home to the Newcastle’s famous Century Theatre. The theatre was a 1600-seat venue for symphony opera concerts. It was especially popular after Victoria Theatre closed. The Century Theatre suffered damage in an earthquake and was torn down in 1989.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Broadmeadow is home to the NRL’s Newcastle Knights. The team plays their home games at McDonald Jones Stadium. Other leisure venues include the Newcastle Regional Showground and the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.

The area is served by Broadmeadow Railway Station.
