Based in NSW’s Southern Tablelands, Braidwood is a small town. It is 200km south-west of Sydney, and has a population of over 1,100 people.

History

The peoples of the Yuin Nation are the original inhabitants of Braidwood. The town proudly honours this history.

The town of Braidwood takes its name from Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson. Dr Wilson is known as a surgeon-superintendent of the ships that took convicts to NSW and Tasmania.

In 1841, Braidwood had 141 residents. Ten years later, in 1851, settlers discovered gold in the area. Over the two decades, the population increased to 10,000 people. However, this did not last long.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Braidwood is the first town listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. In fact, it still retains most of the original town plans. Visitors who come to Braidwood marvel at the beautifully restored old buildings.

For nature lovers, Braidwood is surrounded by beautiful bush and parks. These parks are popular with bushwalkers and four-wheel drivers.
