Based in New South Wales, Bonnet Bay is a suburb in the Sutherland Shire. It lies 29km south of Sydney’s Central Business District. It neighbours Illawong, Sutherland, and Jannali. According to the 2011 census, Bonnet Bay has a population of over 2,100 people.

History

Bonnet Bay could have been named Kirkby. However, there was a cave in the area that was shaped like a bonnet, and named “The Bonnet”. As such, in 1969, The Geographical Names Board officially named the area Bonnet Bay.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, Bonnet Bay is a residential area. However, there is a small shopping centre. Bonnet Bay Shopping Village sits on Kennedy Crescent.

For active residents, Bonnet Bay has many facilities. There is a boat ramp, cricket oval, soccer oval, netball courts, and baseball fields.

The suburb is famous for its Christmas decorations. Every year, residents put on an amazing light display that draws many crowds.
