Based in New South Wales, Bonnells Bay is a suburb in the City of Lake Macquarie. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 3,100 people.

History

Bonnells Bay originally went by the name of Scarborough. When the public school was built, its name was meant to be Scarborough school. However, there was already a public school called Scarborough on NSW’s south coast. So, the Education Department named the school Morisset East.

In 1948, the teacher-in-charge, John Constable, suggested the name be changed to Bonnells Bay Provisional School. In 1967, The Geographical Names Board of NSW changed Scarborough’s name to Bonnells Bay so that it would share the same name as the school.

The name Bonnells Bay comes from the area’s first settlers – the Bonnell family.

Lifestyle and Entertainment.

Bonnells Bay has experienced significant growth after the Second World War. These days, the suburb boasts a shopping centre called The Bay Shopping Centre. This newly-developed building has a club, post office, and many stores.
