History

When European settlers first came to Blackheath, the area was called Hounslow. In 1815, it was named Blackheath after Governor Lachlan Macquarie said that the place had a ‘black wild appearance’.

In 1836, Charles Darwin visited the first building made in Blackheath. This was the Scotch Thistle Inn, built five years earlier.
