Bellevue Hill is a leafy suburb in New South Wales that is located 5 kilometres east of Sydney’s central business district. It has many tree-lined streets and a population of over 10,700.

History

In the 19th century, this suburb was called Vinegar Hill by Irish-Australian immigrants. Governor Lachlan Macquarie wasn’t happy with this name and decided to call the area Bellevue Hill instead.

Later in the 19th century, Bellevue Hill saw the arrival of the Fairfax family. The family lived at Trahiee in Ginahgulla Road. They then moved to Ginahgulla, which is now known as Fairfax House and owned by The Scots College.

Bellevue Hill opened a tram service in 1909. It offered services from Circular Quay via Elizabeth Street and Park Street. The tram line closed in 1959.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are lots of historical buildings in Bellevue Hill including Rona, Ginahgulla and Rovello. In addition to heritage sites, the suburb has a small shopping centre and good schools.

The city and surrounding shopping centres are a short bus ride away from the area. Bellevue Hill is said to be one of the most expensive suburbs of Sydney.
