History

The word Bateau is French for “boat.” Bateau Bay used to be known as Boat Harbour before it was changed in the 1970s.

Indigenous Australians used to call the area Darkinjung. The suburb still has houses that were built in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bateau Bay offers access to Crackneck Point, which is a well-loved surfing point with picnic and BBQ areas. Part of the suburb is covered by Wyrrabalong National Park and its coastal cliffs.

There are also two shopping centres called Bateau Bay Square and Cresthaven Shopping Centre, as well as various other groups of shops.The town has one school and a local bowling club.
