Based in New South Wales, Bargo is a small town of the MacArthur Region. It is 100km southwest of Sydney. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 4,100.

History

The native name for the area is ‘Narregarang’. This is because the soil was ‘shaky’. ‘Bargo’ may originate from local word ‘Barago’. It means ‘thick scrub’.

Bargo’s dense bushland was difficult to traverse in Colonial times. It became known for harbouring ‘bolters’, escaped convicts who became bushrangers.

The Bargo railway station opened in 1919.

Bargo’s community facilities include a racetrack and skate park. Local retailers include two supermarkets and many restaurants.

The Nepean and Avon Dams are popular local attractions.
