Bangor is a suburb in New South Wales, 28km south of Sydney’s CBD in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. In the area commonly called Menai, is has a population of over 5,600 people.
History
In 1885, Bangor was given its name by Owen Jones, the land’s owner. It was named after his birthplace of Bangor in Wales. The Postmaster General’s Office changed the name to Menai in 1910 to avoid confusion with Bangor in Tasmania. After Menai expanded, the eastern area was renamed Bangor in 1976.
During the suburb’s modern development, the streets were all named to honour the Aboriginal people.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The suburb is mostly a residential one. It is home to a small shopping centre, Bangor Shopping Centre, which includes a pharmacy, a post office, a bakery, and a selection of restaurants among other things. It also has two sporting ovals, three schools, and two churches.
