Based in the Riverina district in New South Wales, Balranald is a small town. It has a population of 1,159 and lies in a semi-desert area.

History

Balranald is the original home of the Madi Madi tribe, who called it “Nap Nap”. In 1817, an explorer called John Oxley made his way down the Lachlan River. A collection of 5-metre reeds prevented him from travelling further. It wasn’t until 1845 that Balranald welcomed its first European settler, George Hobler.

The town of Balranald was officially established in 1851. One year later, Balranald officially introduced a post office.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Balranald offers a wide variety of attractions to visitors. The famous “Frog Sculptures” are a town feature. There are 18 frog sculptures scattered through the town. Balranald Heritage Park is home to many of the town’s heritage buildings. These include the Old Gaol and the Old Wintong Station homestead.
