Located between Sydney and Brisbane, Armidale is a city in New South Wales. It’s situated in the Northern Tablelands and has a population of over 23,600.
History
Armidale takes its name from Armadale on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The Anaiwan people originally lived in the area before the British colonial settlement. Back in the early days, small grazing farms were set up. In the mid-1800s, locals found gold at nearby Rocky River and Gara Gorges. This discovery of gold led the area to grow rapidly.
In 1970, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh came to visit Armidale.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The city of Armidale is a major retail centre with three big shopping malls. Armidale also has a pedestrian mall, which was the first in regional Australia. It now has lots of shops and cafes. Furthermore, the city has a large number of schools including the University of New England.
