Allawah is a suburb in southern Sydney, and is 16km south of Sydney’s central business district. The suburb lies in the St George area, and has a population of 5,367 as of the 2011 census.

History

Allawah’s name comes from an Aboriginal word, which means ‘remain here’. The first land grant in the area was made in 1808, and it became known as Townson’s Farm. The post office opened in 1933, and the railway station opened in 1925.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

As a small suburb, Allawah is mainly residential and is around 20 minutes walk from the hub of Hurstville. The area has a railway station, Allawah Railway Station, and there is a local shopping strip nearby. The shopping area has a newsagent, post office, takeaway food shops, and the local pub, the Allawah Hotel. Allawah also has a synagogue and a Catholic Church.
